The QNUK Level 3 Award for Media Safety Advisors (RQF) is a forward-thinking qualification designed to meet the unique demands of working in high-risk environments. Drawing on real-world experience from conflict zones, natural disasters, civil unrest, and mass gatherings, the program offers practical, relevant training for today’s challenges.

Specifically designed for security professionals supporting media operations, the course provides a structured and in-depth foundation in media safety. Participants gain both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills essential for success in this fast-paced and unpredictable sector.

Delivered in an intensive three-day format, the course comprises 21 guided learning hours and blends classroom-based instruction with practical exercises. The program is divided into twelve core modules:

  1. Introduction to Working with Media

  2. Planning and Self-Sufficiency

  3. Vehicle and Travel Safety

  4. Personal Security

  5. Operating in Riots and Demonstrations

  6. Press and Accountability

  7. Engagement with Military and Security Forces

  8. Kidnap and Ransom Awareness

  9. Responding to Terrorist Incidents and Active Shooter Scenarios

  10. De-escalation Strategies and Asset Protection

Assessment Overview

11. Vehicle Safety and Deployment Planning - Participants will be assessed on their ability to:

  • Identify key considerations when selecting an appropriate vehicle for deployment

  • Perform essential safety checks prior to vehicle use

  • Implement control measures to ensure driver reliability and safety

  • Construct effective and secure route plans

  • Assess risks associated with convoy travel

  • Prepare a checklist of essential vehicle equipment

  • Apply personal safety practices when operating or traveling in a vehicle


12. Kidnap Awareness & Risk Assessment - Evaluation will include:

  • Defining terms: kidnap, hostage-taking, and ransom

  • Identifying methods to reduce susceptibility to abduction

  • Completing a comprehensive company-level kidnap risk assessment

  • Developing a personal risk assessment based on a high-profile journalist scenario

  • Explaining each phase of the abduction timeline

  • Preparing effective team briefings on surviving kidnapping situations

  • Describing the impact of heightened tensions on the treatment of abductees

  • Outlining strategies to survive a rescue attempt

  • Explaining reintegration procedures after captivity

Certification Requirement: To successfully complete the program, participants must submit all required coursework within ten days of the course’s conclusion.
